The Story Behind The Halloween Daiquiri

Halloween is tomorrow, and that means it’s time to start thinking about a fun cocktail to celebrate the night. And with the holiday falling on a weekend this year, we can all expect the celebrations to get a little more boozy than usual. Looking for a drink with a lovely orange color, this year I’ve decided to make a batch of mandarin daiquiris to enjoy.

I love mandarins because they’re in season, and also because they have a delightfully sweet taste. Add these gems to a Daiquiri and you have got yourself a fancy, “grown up” Halloween cocktail. Daiquiris always seem to get a bad reputation because we usually think of the frozen strawberry variety served served out of those slushy machines at bars, but the classic daiquiri is nothing like these syrupy concoctions, plus it’s easy to make with only three ingredients: rum, lime, and sugar.

The only thing that may hold you back from making this drink is that to make it well, you really need to use fresh juice and that means juicing all the limes and mandarins. A couple of solutions include juicing everything ahead of time in shifts so that your hand doesn’t get too tired. Or you could play a fun drinking game and make the losers juice a round of daiquiris. I think that for my party, I’ll go with the later because why not make my friends work a bit for a delicious drink?!

Ingredients

  • 5 ounces of rum
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • 6-8 mandarins, juiced
  • 1 teaspoon of agave nectar
  • ½ cup of ice

Directions

  1. Add rum, lime juice, mandarin juice, agave nectar, and ice to a cocktail shaker.
  2. Shake then strain the mixture into the serving glass.
  3. Garnish with a slice of mandarin orange.
