The Story Behind The Grapefruit Tequila Sour

I’m in Mexico this week and that means I’m getting to discover tons of new tequilas. And of course the first thing I think about when discovering a new spirit I like is how i’d use it in a cocktail. With Cinco de Mayo rapidly approaching I wanted to create a cocktail that was a departure from the standard Margarita or Paloma but was still influenced by these classics. So I decided to combine some ingredients from both cocktails to make this Grapefruit Tequila Sour.

From the classic Paloma cocktail I took the grapefruit flavors and from the Margarita I borrowed agave nectar and lime juice. Then I added an egg white to give the drink a luscious mouthfeel. The combination of all these flavors really makes one of the best Cinco de Mayo cocktails out there. The flavor is bright, fresh, and bold.

If you love salt rims on your Margarita or Paloma feel free to add one here as it will balance out some of the fresh citrus flavors from the lime and grapefruit juice. This cocktail is so beautiful that you could double up and serve it for Cinco de Mayo and Mother’s Day. This is perfect for mom, as it’s garnished with a beautiful edible flower. Enjoy all your celebrations this weekend!
