Patrón In Depth
When Patrón first launched in 1989, most Americans thought of tequila as a cheap, bad-tasting shot. But with its beautiful bottle, impressive cork, and a smart marketing, Patrón is credited with popularizing premium tequila in the United States.
The original form of Patrón was produced by Casa 7 Lenguas, where Martin Crowley first tasted it in Mexico. After partnering with Ilana Edelstein and John Paul DeJoria (who is the co-founder of Paul Mitchell hair products), they bought the distillery and built their new brand.
Patrón dominates the premium tequila market today, generating more than $1 billion in revenue annually.
Patrón hosts an annual Bottle Art Contest, with $10k going to the winning creation inspired by—and crafted with—Patrón bottles.
